Bikes, strollers, scooters and skateboards had a secure and convenient place to park for Hometown Days visitors, thanks to Suzanne Emerson and other San Carlos Green and youth volunteers.  The Bike Corral was set up in the fenced bocce ball area in Burton Park, with bike racks placed under the oaks by San Carlos Parks & Rec.  High school students earned volunteer hours by helping check the bikes in and out, supervised by San Carlos Green volunteers.

Act now to show your support for a California single-use plastic bag ban

Environment California

Sea turtles mistake floating bags for food. Protect them and other wildlife from single-use plastic bags.

We were successful in San Carlos and many other California communities, and our city and creeks show the results! Show your support for a state-wide ban by using this easy form to send a message to your assemblymember. Go to Environment California‘s on-line form at this link: https://secure3.convio.net/engage/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=10681

A hearing is scheduled for May 14, so send your message of support today!

Good news about San Carlos creeks

Creek with pallets and cardboard

San Carlos Greeners Cathrin Callas and Pat Potter took a Sunday morning a few weeks ago to check the status of our creeks. We are happy to report that they looked better than last year. In part, we are sure, to the single use plastic bag ban. Cordilleras Creek behind Second Harvest Food Bank, had a fair amount of industrial trash in it along with an encampment (see picture), and there is a big couch on the banks of Cordilleras Creek over by Pulgas Ridge, but all in all — not bad. Visited Edgewood Park to see the wildflowers and checked the creek there, and it looks good!

Bike to Work Day: May 8

What’s happening May 8th? That’s the day you dust off your bike, fill your tires with air, and ride to work! It’s the annual Bike To Work Day! San Carlos Green will be at the train station cheering you on and handing out some cool swag. Haven’t you wanted to see what it is like to ride the train with your bike — you’ll be one of the hip riders who know how to get around. Check out the train schedule at www.caltrain.com/schedules.html. If you’ve never done it — don’t worry — other bike riders will show you the ropes. Everyone is a first time rider once!

Water Conservation Challenge – pledge before April 30

handful of water

San Carlos is signed up for the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.  Do your part by going to the challenge website and taking the pledge. It’s free and you may win a prize!  The challenge ends April 30 — don’t wait!

See Mayor Olbert’s blog post about this: http://council.olbert.com/2014/04/02/saving-water-and-energy-for-fun-profit/

Right now we are #4 for a city our size — behind a city in Nebraska and two Southern California beach towns. Take the pledge now!
