Vista Park’s Native
Landscape!!
San Carlos Green and the
San Carlos Parks and Recreation Department have undertaken a new
plan to revive the native landscape at Vista Park.
Our vision is
to:
- Create a vital and
self-sustaining native landscape which serves as an environmental model for our
community and beyond
- Reduce the use of water
and eliminate the use of chemicals
- Act as a pollinator
garden for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other
species
- Provide an educational
resource for our schools and members of the community on our native landscape
and sustainable gardening practices

Gachina Landscape Management, master gardeners, native plant society members, a professional native restoration biologist, our
San Carlos Parks and Recreation Department and over 50 volunteers haved all contributed to the success of this community project.
We
have made great progress in our first four volunteer days and had great
fun. The two large landscaped areas have been irrigated with water efficient MP Rotator spray heads. We have planted nearly 250 native plants and broadcasted many wild flower seeds. We have inplimented two experimental grass restoration areas in the meadow. And we have been working on interpretive signage that will be installed at the park.
But more work is needed to maintain this native landscape and prepare it for an official ribbon cutting. This Saturday we will cntinue the weeding around the perimiter of the park and where the weeds are coming back - aggressively! Continual efforts are necessary to keep these at bay and not let the park once again be overrun by weeds.
Later
in the fall, we will approach the entire meadow in an attempt to
completely irradicate all the non-native weeds and grasses.
We hope to see you at Vista park this coming Saturday April 26 from 10-1
