San Mateo County Green Business Pilot Program Building a Greener Business Community one Business at a Time
Are
you a small business that wants to go Green? San Mateo County is now
offering a chance for small and medium size businesses to become a Green
Business. The county supervisor's office, the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce and the City of San Carlos have been working together to develop this voluntary program. This
voluntary program can benefit the environment and the business
community in several ways:
Participating agencies are here to assist the efforts of businesses and to share vital information with them on conservation. The County staff will be coordinating the overall program, but the San Carlos Coordinators, Brian Moura and Sheryl Pomerenk, will work directly with businesses. The city coordinators will arrange and conduct the initial review to show what businesses will need to do. After compliance is verified, the County will certify the participant as a Green Business.
The level of compliance depends on the nature of the business. The pilot program will focus on four types of businesses: auto repair shops, hotels, restaurants and office/retail space.
Businesses that go the extra mile to reduce pollution, improve recycling and conserve resources will receive free advertising in ABAG's (Association of Bay Area Government) Green Business Directory. As of today, there are over 925 businesses certified in the Bay Area. ABAG also maintains a listing of certified businesses on its website. Businesses will also receive a window decal for display to let their customers know they are certified.
We live in a community where our residents share enfironmental values and appreciate businesses that are environmentally aware. I believe this is a great opportunity to demonstrate that commerce and environmental values can go hand in hand. Please contact the County's Recycle-Works staff at 599-1485 for an application to go green!
